The following key nutrients help ensure that children obtain adequate nutrition for optimal
health.

VITAMINS AND MINERALS
A child’s diet must provide the essential nutrients needed to support physical and cognitive
development. For optimal health, children must obtain a balanced and healthy diet. Adding a vitamin
and mineral supplement to a child’s diet ensures that these important nutrients are not missed.

Pediatricians especially recommend a daily multiple vitamin and mineral supplement for children who
may not eat regular, well-balanced meals made from fresh, whole foods; picky eaters who may not eat
enough; children with high activity levels who play physically demanding sports; children who eat a
lot of fast food and processed foods; and children eating a vegetarian, dairy-free or other
restricted diet. A multiple vitamin and mineral supplement is also recommended for children who may
drink a lot of carbonated sodas, which can leach vitamins
and minerals from the body.1

CALCIUM
Lifelong calcium intake is essential for maintaining healthy bones. Obtaining adequate calcium is
especially important during childhood and adolescence, when bones are growing and developing. The
American Academy of Pediatrics has stated that, “Most older children and adolescents in the United
States currently do not achieve the recommended intake of calcium. Maintaining adequate calcium
intake during childhood and adolescence is necessary for the development of peak bone mass, which
may be important in reducing the risk of fractures and osteoporosis later in life. Optimal calcium
intake is especially relevant during adolescence, when
most bone mineral accretion occurs.”2

VITAMIN D
Vitamin D is most well-known for its role in helping the body maintain healthy levels of calcium
and phosphorus. It is essential for building and maintaining healthy bones. Calcium can be absorbed
by the body only when vitamin D is present. Vitamin D plays many important roles beyond bone
health. In adults, recent scientific evidence suggests that vitamin D plays a vital
role in maintaining innate immunity.

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) has recently doubled its recommendation for the minimum
amount of vitamin D that children should get daily. The new guidelines recommend at least 400
international units daily.3 That’s about four 8-ounce glasses of milk, but most children don’t
drink enough milk to provide adequate levels of vitamin D. The AAP states that the best way to
ensure that children receive adequate vitamin D is through supplementation.

OMEGA-3 FATTY ACIDS
Omega-3 fatty acids are essential to human health but cannot be manufactured by the body. For
this reason, omega-3 fatty acids must be obtained through the diet. Scientific studies confirm the
numerous benefits that omega-3 fatty acids can have on human health in terms of mental, visual,
nervous system and cardiovascular benefits. Two long-chain forms of omega-3 fatty acids, DHA
(docosahexaenoic acid) and EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid), are both found almost exclusively in deep,
cold-water fish. These fatty acids are key building blocks in every cell in the body. DHA2

and EPA are recognized for their health benefits in all life stages and are essential components as
the body grows and develops.

DHA is critical for the optimal development and function of the brain, eyes and central nervous
system during infancy and childhood. DHA is a major structural fat in the brain and eyes,
representing approximately 97% of all omega-3 fats in the brain and 93% of all omega-3 fats in the
retina.4 Because DHA is a primary component of the brain and retina, a lack of sufficient DHA can
negatively impact the development and function of these organs.

WHOLE FOOD ANTIOXIDANTS
Modern diets often lack sufficient amounts of fruits, vegetables and other whole foods. Thus they
are generally low in essential nutrients and antioxidants needed for optimum health. Research
continues to show that a higher intake of antioxidant-rich fruits, vegetables and other whole foods
is extremely important for good health.5 The National Cancer Institute recommends eating at least 5
to 9 servings of fruits and vegetables per day.6

Fruits and vegetables are naturally rich in antioxidants and phytonutrients such as resveratrol,
ellagic acid, flavonoids, carotenoids, anthocyanins and chlorophyll. Whole foods are also a natural
source of essential nutrients, including vitamins, minerals and amino acids. Whole foods provide a
broad spectrum of phytonutrients that work synergistically to promote overall health and wellness.
Research indicates that combinations of nutrients and antioxidants found in whole
foods may have greater protective effects than individual nutrients taken alone.5,7

DIGESTIVE ENZYMES
Digestive enzymes are made by the body but are also obtained through the diet. Fruits and
vegetables are good sources of dietary enzymes. Unfortunately, cooking food can destroy these
enzymes. Like their parents, most children do not eat enough raw foods and can therefore benefit
from digestive enzyme supplementation.8

Digestive issues are becoming more and more common in children. Even if a child eats a healthful
diet, if his or her digestive system does not function optimally, the child may not get all of the
nutrients he or she needs.8 Lack of optimal digestive function due to enzyme deficiency
can lead to malabsorption of nutrients. Many children may not experience optimal health because of
faulty digestion.8,9

WATER

#1. 75% of Americans are chronically dehydrated.

(Likely applies to half the world population)

#2.. In 37% of Americans, the thirst mechanism is so weak that it is mistaken for hunger.

#3. Even MILD dehydration will slow down one’s metabolism as 3%.

#4. One glass of water will shut down midnight hunger pangs for almost 100% of the dieters studied in a University of Washington study.

#5. Lack of water, the #1 trigger of daytime fatigue.

#6. Preliminary research indicates that 8-10 glasses of water a day could significantly ease back and joint pain for up to 80% of sufferers.

#7. A mere 2% drop in body water can trigger fuzzy short-term memory, trouble with basic math, and difficulty focusing on the computer screen or on a printed page.

#8. Drinking 5 glasses of water daily decreases the risk of colon cancer by 45%, plus it can slash the risk of breast cancer by 79% and one is 50% less likely to develop bladder cancer. Are you drinking the amount of water you should drink every day?

COKE

#1. In many states the highway patrol carries two gallons of Coke in the trunk to remove blood from the highway after a car accident.

#2. You can put a T-bone steak in a bowl of Coke and it will be gone in two days.

#3. To clean a toilet: Pour a can of Coca-Cola into the toilet bowl and let the ‘real thing’ sit for one hour, then flush clean. The citric acid in Coke removes stains from vitreous china.

#4. To remove rust spots from chrome car bumpers: Rub the bumper with a rumpled-up piece of Reynolds Wrap aluminum foil dipped in Coca-Cola.

#5. To clean corrosion from car battery terminals: Pour a can of Coca-Cola over the terminals to bubble away the corrosion.

#6. To loosen a rusted bolt: Apply a cloth soaked in Coca-Cola to the rusted bolt for several minutes.

#7. To bake a moist ham: Empty a can of Coca-Cola into the baking pan, wrap the ham in aluminum foil, and bake. Thirty minutes before ham is finished, remove the foil, allowing the drippings to mix with the Coke for a sumptuous brown gravy.

#8. To remove grease from clothes: Empty a can of Coke into the load of greasy clothes, add detergent, and run through a regular cycle. The Coca-Cola will help loosen grease stains. It will also clean road haze from your windshield.

FOR YOUR INFORMATION:

#1. The active ingredient in Coke is phosphoric acid. It will dissolve a nail in about four days. Phosphoric acid also Leaches calcium from bones and is a major contributor to the rising increase of osteoporosis.

#2. To carry Coca-Cola syrup! (the concentrate) the commercial trucks must use a hazardous Material place cards reserved for highly corrosive materials.

#3. The distributors of Coke have been using it to clean engines of the trucks for about 20 years! Now the question is, would you like a glass of water? or Coke?

A properly balanced diet is necessary for maintaining good health. The digestive system
essentially converts the foods that we eat into the energy needed to support life. The
anatomy of our digestive system involves a complex series of organs and glands that
work in concert to break down our consumed foods into smaller molecules that can be
utilized by the body.

Digestion begins in the mouth where food is partially broken down by the process of
chewing and by the enzymatic action of the carbohydrate-digesting amylase enzymes
present in the saliva. Food is then swallowed and makes its way down the esophagus to
the stomach.

In the stomach, food is mixed, ground and digested by gastric acid and a proteindigesting enzyme called pepsin. Gastric acid consists mainly of hydrochloric acid (HCl),
and it efficiently breaks down food material, particularly protein. If production of gastric
acid is decreased, as is often the case with advancing age, digestion is less efficient.
Researchers in the U.S. found that over 30 percent of men and women past the age of
60 suffer from atrophic gastritis, a condition marked by little or no gastric acid secretion
(1). Fortunately, natural approaches and nutritional supplements can help support
optimal digestion in the stomach.

The partially digested food leaves the stomach and enters the small intestine, a tubular
structure composed of three segments: the duodenum, jejunum and ileum. The
duodenum continues the process of breaking down food with the aid of bile from the
gallbladder and enzymes released by the pancreas and the duodenal walls. Bile causes
a breakdown of fat from large to smaller globules. Further digestion of fats, protein and
carbohydrates takes place with the help of the pancreatic enzymes lipase, trypsin and
amylase, respectively. Nutritional supplements that contain these enzymes help support
small intestinal digestive action.

Digestion is basically complete once food passes through the duodenum. Absorption of
nutrients into the bloodstream takes place in the jejunum and ileum segments of the
small intestine. After absorption of food molecules into the bloodstream, the blood is
purified by the liver to remove harmful substances. The liver also stores fat-soluble
vitamins (vitamins A, D, E and K) and excess glucose for future use. Nutritional
supplements can be used to support these valuable liver functions.

The large intestine receives mostly indigestible material and water from the small
intestine. Excess water and any residual minerals are absorbed in the large intestine.
Fiber aids the process of moving the remaining debris through the large intestine thus
easing the passage of waste known as a stool. In addition to promoting elimination, fiber
also helps to support friendly bacteria. About 100 trillion bacteria reside in the digestive
system. These bacteria in the large intestine perform several essential functions.

Probiotics, as these friendly bacteria are called, promote efficient digestion, support the
immune system, inhibit the growth of pathogenic microorganisms, and produce several
vitamins. Many supplement products that consist of soluble and/or insoluble fiber from a
variety of plant sources benefit waste removal. Additionally, many different bacterial
species in the form of nutritional supplements function as probiotics.

Probiotics have long been known to provide many benefits to human health as
mentioned in the previous paragraph. I have read with great interest several recent
reports on some additional actions that are quite surprising. A good example here is the
experiment where mice, fed broth containing Lactobacillus rhamnosus, behaved less
anxiously than mice fed broth without bacteria. These behavioral changes were partially
explained by differences in brain chemical receptors and stress hormone
(corticosterone) levels. The overall observation was that a change in the mix of
intestinal bacteria provided by L. rhamnosus influenced mouse behavior by way of the
vagus nerve. The vagal impulses induced by the microbes resulted in an increase in
GABA (gamma amino butyric acid, a neurotransmitter or brain chemical) receptors in
the brain and lower levels of stress hormone. The net result was a significant decrease
in anxiety observed in the mice receiving the bacteria-containing broth (2). Just a few
years ago, most scientists were of the opinion that probiotics only acted locally in the
gut. However, this study suggests that gut bacteria could play a role in various brain and
psychiatric disorders as well as individual behavioral differences.

Another fairly intense research area involves how intestinal microbes contribute to or
counteract chronic inflammation. As we all know, chronic inflammation is associated
with many disease states. Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) appears to be directly
influenced by specific probiotic species. It was interesting to read that those probiotic
strains that specifically keep IBD in remission do not function normally in the presence
of an iron-rich environment (3). Species of Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium were
found to be inhibited by high iron levels and this resulted in a failure to reduce
inflammation. These research data suggest plausible explanations as to why IBD
becomes established.

It has been long assumed that the intestinal microflora consisted of many bacterial
populations. The presence of fungi in the gastrointestinal tract was nearly always
associated with an infectious disease. However, a new study has demonstrated that the
mammalian gut contains a rich fungal community and that these fungi interact with
immune system receptors (4). Disturbances in this communication between immune
system receptors and the indigenous fungi will usually result in inflammatory conditions
such as IBD. These research data show that the fungal community in the gut can
coexist with bacteria and that this diverse microbial population has established a
delicate balance with the immune system. Further clarification of these complex
interactions will provide a better understanding of gut-mediated health and disease. Of
equal importance, as this probiotic research continues, valuable therapies will
eventually emerge.

Tetanus is a infectious disease caused by the toxin of Clostridium tetani, a ubiquitous, spore-forming, gram-positive bacillus found in soil and animal excrement. C. tetani bacteria require anaerobic conditions to be active – that is, they cannot function in the presence of oxygen. Upon contact with oxygen, they turn into very resilient and long-lived spores. Spores are inactive and can only germinate in an anaerobic environment.Reported tetanus cases have declined >95%, and deaths from tetanus have declined >99% in the United States since 1947, when the disease became reportable nationally. In a CDC report, released April, 2011, there were only 233 cases of tetanus was reported from 45 states between 2001 and 2008, which is 0.10 cases per 1 million population. Among the 195 patients whose medical history was known, 30 had diabetes and 27 were intravenous drug users. Of those patients with wounds, 132 were punctures, or tissues that were contaminated, infected, or devitalized. While tetanus is a serious infection, it is NOT uniformly fatal. In fact, in the 2011 report, 87% of those who contracted tetanus fully recovered.
Because C. tetani is ubiquitous in the environment, thorough assessment and management of wounds, especially deep wound cleansing, use of hydrogen peroxide and topical antibiotics are important for the prevention of tetanus.

We’ve also been told that the risk of tetanus is greater than the risk of vaccine – in every instance – because the vaccine is “totally benign”.There are several tetanus shots: dT, TT and DTaP. Tetanus shots contain the following ingredients: bovine extract, aluminum, 2-phenoxyethanol, formaldehyde, and latex in the stopper. When antibodies are developed against β2GPI (called autoantibodies), the patient is diagnosed with anti-phospholipid syndrome (APS). APS is an autoimmune disease with a confusing name because the deleterious antibodies are directed against the plasma protein, β2GPI and not against phospholipids.Patients with APS are at increased risk of venous and arterial blood clots and thrombocytopenia (low platelets). β2GPI autoantibodies are only found in patients with autoimmune diseases, while autoantibodies to the phospholipids can be found transiently after someone has an infectious diseases. This study, found in the Vaccine Research Library in the “tetanus” section, documents that through the process of molecular mimicry, tetanus antibodies may cross react with glycoprotein β2GPI, creating a serious autoimmune disease, leading to an increased risk of blood clots and autoimmune disease.

1. Tetanus, while serious, is less fatal than many diseases. It is not uniformly fatal.
2. Tetanus can be avoided by good wound hygiene. Let the wound bleed for several minutes and wash it out well with soapy water and hydrogen peroxide.
3. You can get 4+ tetanus shots and still get the disease. A tetanus shot is not guaranteed protection.
4. Tetanus shots are not benign. They can cause serious side effeccts.
5. Tetanus shots contain several toxic chemicals, including aluminum, formaldehyde, and 2-phenoxyethanol.

The general topic of men’s health is quite broad and can include issues that are part of women’s health too. Good examples here are cardiovascular health and weight loss, as well as sexual wellbeing. Prostate health and conditions such as erectile dysfunction (ED) are peculiar to men while in the older female, sexual dysfunction nearly always centers on menopause. In younger women, specific physiological disorders affecting sexual health seem to predominate.

In men, vascular health and sexual function are very closely related. Erectile dysfunction not only adversely affects intimate relationships, but it can also indicate potential cardiovascular health problems. In many cases, erectile difficulties may be a sign of an underlying cardiovascular disorder. Because vascular health reflects erectile function, it’s not surprising that nutritional supplement ingredients that support healthy erectile performance also contribute to cardiovascular health.

Supplements that are intended to combat ED usually contain ingredients that will support optimal nitric oxide (NO) levels in the body. Nitric oxide relaxes blood vessels to facilitate improved blood flow. The amino acid arginine is well-known for its cardiovascular benefits primarily because of its conversion to NO in the endothelial cells that line the internal surfaces of arteries. Increased vascular
smooth muscle relaxation and the resulting improved blood flow to erectile tissue are due to enhanced NO production. It has been shown that oral arginine supplementation significantly supports erectile function when compared with placebo (1).

Horny goatweed (Epimedium sagittatum) has been used in Traditional Chinese Medicine for centuries because of its aphrodisiac effects and support of erectile health. Scientists have isolated and characterized icariin and have shown this flavonoid derivative to be the major Viagra-like active component (2). Recent research has demonstrated that icariin selectively inhibits phosphodiesterase type 5 (PPE-5), an enzyme that causes a rapid termination of male sexual activity. By blocking this enzyme, sexual activity in men is sustained. Additionally, icariin enhances the production of NO from arginine. As we now know, increased production of NO by cells in the arterial wall results in dilatation of the penile blood vessels, which increases blood flow and maintains erectile function. This mechanism of action for natural icariin is amazingly similar to that of synthetic
Viagra (3). The enhanced NO production from arginine also underlines potential cardiovascular benefits. Other natural ingredients have a long history of safe and effective use in ED and complement the actions of arginine and horny goatweed. These include Maca
root or Peruvian Ginseng (Lepidium meyenii), Yohimbe root bark (Pausinystalia yohimbe) and DHEA (dehydroepiandrosterone). All three of these ingredients act as aphrodisiacs and are noted for their erectile and sexual health benefits in men. Interestingly, maca has recently been suggested to benefit female sexual health and to support female sexual dysfunction (4).

Another health issue that is fairly widespread in men is enlarged prostate or benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Keep in mind that BPH is not prostatic cancer, but it can be bothersome. Men usually know when they encounter BPH because of difficult urination and frequent nocturnal urination. The currently accepted and most plausible theory supporting the etiology of BPH centers on prostatic testosterone and its excessive conversion to the more potent dihydrotestosterone (DHT). The enzyme 5-alpha reductase catalyzes this conversion, and once formed, DHT stimulates the proliferation of prostatic cells. It appears logical that high levels of DHT lead to excessive numbers of prostatic cells, which can result in an enlarged prostate. Saw Palmetto (Serenoa repens) is the most popular and best understood ingredient that provides benefit in cases of BPH. The lipophilic (fat soluble) fraction from Saw Palmetto berries is most active and it appears that fatty acids from this fraction inhibit 5-alpha reductase to lower prostate levels of DHT. The bark of the African Plum Tree (Pygeum africana) and the root of Stinging Nettle (Urtica dioica) have shown significant benefit in cases of BPH (5,6). Also, anecdotal reports exist of the carotenoid lycopene and the mineral zinc producing prostate health benefits.

Maintenance of men’s health is an important priority and should not be ignored. Several nutritional approaches offer meaningful benefits. My belief is that men should optimize the proper functioning of all body systems so as to preserve the highest achievable health status.
